Write Club

Oskaloosa Write Club

Oskaloosa Write Club is for writers of all sorts in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, and the surrounding area, including nearby towns and counties. Novelists. Playwrights. Short Story Writers. Screenwriters. Poets. Essayists. All wordsmiths (aspiring and seasoned) are welcome!

We believe that you have a story in you. (Or a cookbook. Or a bunch of haikus.)

We believe in the power of creativity, coffee, and comradery.

We believe—in the timeless words of Ernest Hemingway and Jodi Picoult—that "the first draft of anything is shit" and that "you can't edit a blank page."

We believe that something magical happens when you gather a group of writers in a room, hit a timer, and write for thirty minutes.

Whether you're a seasoned scribe working on your years-in-the-making masterpiece or a novice trying to put your idea to paper...

Whether you want to write fantasy, historical fiction, love stories, poetry, memoir, song lyrics, thank you notes, or essays...

We cannot wait to meet you and type (or scrawl) alongside you.

Curious? Read our club rules, check out the FAQs, attend our next Write Club, or follow us on Facebook.

What to expect:

We usually kick off with a quick round-robin in which we introduce ourselves and share what we're currently working on. There's usually a reading, followed by discussion, a writing sprint or activity, and optional time to share what you wrote.

What we're reading:

At each meeting, there's typically a reading followed by reflection, discussion, and a timed writing session. Right now, we're working our way through Out of Silence, Sound. Out of Nothing, Something: A Writer's Guide by Susan Griffin

You are not required to purchase or own a copy. You're also not required to read ahead or do any prep ahead of any meeting.
